Interview with Nancy

Personal

1. Education / work experience?
I studied Media, Information and Communication in Amsterdam and worked for a couple of magazines and websites. I was approached by Assepoester through my blog: NEnz.web-log.nl. I got a nice message from the Assepoester Chief asking me to call him sometime. During the phone call he only had to mention the words ‘Blond Amsterdam’, ‘The handbook for DIY divas’ and ‘cupcakes’ and I knew that this was the right job for me.

2. Married/ Engaged/ In love /Divorced/Kids?
Happily in love! We’re about to move in together.

3. What are your hobbies?
Reading magazines (I like the obscure ones best; I’m especially fond of foreign magazines), attending concerts, singing, browsing through books on art and fashion, poetry, going to fashion parties, cooking, photography, looking at great art, graphic design, baking cupcakes, serial shopping (eBaby!), reading and writing great books. I am never bored!

4. What is your favourite colour?
Hot pink of course!

5. What is your favourite movie?
Love Jones. Especially the poetry in it is super romantic. And furthermore Crash, Lost in Translation, White Oleander, Basquiat, Frida, Marie Antoinette, Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain and many, many more. Especially drama, great imagery & romance please!

6. Favourite cocktail/drink?
I really like Mojitos. And otherwise a Martini, baby…

“I would think it great if Fiona Hering were to decide
to wear only Assepoester dresses”

7. What is the most romantic thing that ever happened to you?
My boyfriend told me he had to work on my birthday... which I didn’t like very much, because I had secretly hoped to have a fun day together.
Later that day, while I was doing the groceries, he gave me a panicky call to ask me where I was, because he had taken the day off to surprise me and was now waiting in front of my door …
The surprise was ruined even more when he shut his car door with the key still inside... as well as my birthday gift! It was sooo sad!
However, the fact that he had planned the whole thing for me was very romantic in itself, haha!

8. Finish this sentence: when I grow up, I….
… will be a successful writer (with at least three books), will live in New York and have a walk-in closet full of clothes. Plus a very close friendship with Fiona Hering, designer Daryl van Wouw, Amy Winehouse and graffiti artist Fafi.
Assepoester

9. What is it like to be an Assepoester?
Like a fairytale come true, haha! But seriously: I really do feel that the way I was recruited by Assepoester is reminiscent of fairytales!
It is so rewarding to be part of the team: you are involved in fashion the entire day and the colleagues are all just so sweet and so much fun! So it’s really great what we all do as a team.

10. How do you become an Assepoester? Do you have any advice?
Dare to be bold; it is important to have an opinion of your own. Don’t care what others may think! Aside from this, you have to have a passion for fashion. Because that is what it is all about at Assepoester!

11. What is your Arnhems Meisje feeling?
Driving your car on a sunny day with the hood down and the wind blowing through your hair. And then singing along with eighties songs that are just too wrong at full volume.

12. What is the greatest address from the Roze Boekje (pink booklet)?
www.tshirtpatisserie.co.uk; the people there are sooo sweet! At T-Shirt Patisserie you can design your own t-shirt online and have it sent to you. A couple of days later you will receive your own bonbon box filled with an enormous amount of candy from the eighties and nineties and a great t-shirt.

13. Which PR assignment for Assepoester do you remember best?
It was not so much a PR job, but I did the styling for the big photo shoot of the Arnhems Meisje collection. This meant: start shopping for props and making contact with the great companies that wanted to participate in the shoot really early in the process. It was all really exiting and it was just unbelievably fun to do! And once again, I learned ever so much from it.

14. How can a client make you happy (what kind of present)?
Cupcakes, macaron cookies and books on fashion.

15. What kind of publicity for Assepoester would make you really happy?
If Fiona Hering were to decide to wear only Assepoester dresses and if designers like Daryl van Wouw, Percy Irausquin and Bas Kosters would make a guest design.

Arnhem

16. What’s so great about Arnhem?
That it really is a fashion town. Most people think that they should go to Amsterdam for fashion; but the real fashion talents come from Arnhem. The annual Mode Biënnale (fashion event) is absolutely fantastic.

“The great thing about Arnhem is that at it really is
a fashion town. Most people think that they should go to Amsterdam for fashion; but the real fashion talents come from Arnhem.”

17. What is your favourite other store in Arnhem?
Coming Soon; a shop full of unique and exclusive designer clothes, toys, shoes, jewellery and more. It’s a little bit like Colette in Paris, but then much closer!

18. What is your favourite restaurant/cafe/club in Arnhem?
Bar Florian. It’s lovely to drink cocktails and eat snacks there!

Fashion & glamour

19. If you had to design your own formal evening dress, what would it look like?
Colourful, hip, fun & flirty. It would be okay if it had a weird element in it. And I also like the Amy Winehouse type of dress; short with a somewhat wider skirt.

20. What are your favourite models?
Doutzen Kroes (those lips!), Gemma Ward, Devon Aoki, Chanel Iman and Kate of course.

21. What is your absolute horror outfit?
The wedding dress of Celine Dion. When I see it, I start hearing sounds from the movie Psycho.

22. And what is your favourite outfit for going out?
For a concert or a night of dancing: skinny jeans, a top with batwing sleeves and ankle boots or comfy sneakers; for a gala, fashion event or festive event, an evening dress or a little black dress, of course. I always wear many accessories in order to give an outfit the me look and in order to be able to wear it differently another time.

23. Favourite designer?
Daryl van Wouw, END, Christian Lacroix, Chanel; I like it when things look a little whacky. I especially like it if there are little jokes incorporated in clothing. The Daryl dress with earplugs in bright colours of the last Fashion Week was great for instance!

24. Biggest fashion disaster ever?
My entire puberty. For my own good I won’t say anything else on the subject.

25. When do you feel totally glamorous?
When I’m dancing to fantastic music in my most beautiful outfit with a cocktail in my hand at a very hip party or a great concert.
